This outdrive skeg was repaired by a local prop shop. They welded and ground down to a smooth finish. As you can see by the before and after pictures they did a very good job. A little paint and you wont even know that it was ever damaged.
The cost $175, Not bad right? Actually it's not considering most shops will charge a lot more than that and might not do such a good job.
So what's the problem you might be wondering? Not much except that the lower unit had to be removed, the prop taken off and all the oil drained out of it. At $85/hr. plus a oil disposal fee the mechanic charged its a good thing it didn't take that long.
Then it took several days at the prop shop to complete the job that could have been better spent out on the water.
Back to the mechanic to put it all back together. High dollar factory zinc primer and paint. Some new gear case oil at today's high oil prices and the job was done!
The end result: The skeg was repaired. Total cost: Well over $300. Lost fishing time: About a week.
This skeg was repaired using a Skeg Protector skeg guard.
Total time: Maybe 30 minutes.
Tools needed to install a skeg guard: A drill and wrench.
Total cost: Less than half the cost of having a skeg welded on.
